Moonstone is a variety of a feldspar mineral. During formation, orthoclase and albite separate into alternating layers. When light falls between these thin layers it is scattered producing the phenomenon called adularescence, which is the light that appears to billow across a gem. Moonstone is a very popular gemstone because of a glow of white, silver or blue light that floats under the surface of the stone. A rare variety known as rainbow moonstone got its name because it displays a rainbow within the stone.
